"My Dearest Gwern,
As always, on the day of your birth you've expressed the desire to spend this reason for celebration in solitude. However I must remind you that we are still very much so a family. Despite the hardships and sufferings that we've had to endure, we should rejoice the things that we still hold dear.
I realize that you've always found it difficult to find cause to celebrate whenever festive occasions come to surface but please try to acknowledge the fact that I would very much enjoy spending time with my daughter. The day you were brought into this world will forever be one of the most cherished days of my life.
I am proud of your accomplishments and of the woman that you have become. I would like to implore you to cease chastising yourself for sins that are not yours to carry. I'd also like to apologize to you once more for the criticisms I've expressed to you concerning Bethany's fate. It was never truly your fault. It was wrong of me to place the blame of her passing onto you. You are my precious girl and you should be allowed the happiness that you rightfully deserve.. I've forced you to carry a burden that was not yours to carry. I should have been the one to protect you from these responsibilities instead I allowed you to grow up too fast.
Even so, it is never too late to seek out what you most desire, I'm certain that your sister would wish you the same. There is more to life than one's duty, despite Carver's decision to follow a more difficult path.
